Most uniform budgets leak through the laundry rather than the purchase order. How to get a second year out of garments you already own.
How Should Uniforms Be Washed?
Wash inside out to protect embroidery and printed branding from abrasion, at the lowest temperature the hygiene requirement allows, without overloading the drum, and treat stains before anything goes into a dryer because heat sets them permanently. Those four habits extend garment life more than any fabric upgrade. Two categories change the rules. On flame resistant workwear, never use fabric softener, which leaves a flammable residue that compromises the protection the garment was bought for; bleach and starch cause similar problems. On high visibility garments, retroreflective tape loses performance through washing long before the fabric looks worn, and the failure is invisible in daylight, so inspect the tape rather than the cloth and replace on a planned cycle.
Replacement Cycle Is a Laundry Decision
Two identical garments issued on the same day can be a year apart in condition, and the difference is almost never the fabric. It is wash temperature, what goes in the drum with them, and whether anyone told the person doing the washing what the garment actually is.
That matters commercially. If you judge uniforms on cost per year of service rather than cost per piece, laundering is the biggest single lever you control after the original specification. It is also free.
The Rules That Apply to Almost Everything
Wash inside out
Protects embroidery and printed branding from abrasion against the drum and against other garments. This single habit extends the visible life of a logo more than any other.
Use the lowest effective temperature
Heat is what fades colour and breaks down fibres. Where hygiene protocol does not require a high temperature, dropping it noticeably extends garment life.
Do not iron over branding
Direct heat on a printed transfer or vinyl will soften and mark it. Iron around the logo, or press from the reverse with a cloth between.
Treat stains before drying
Heat from a dryer sets most stains permanently. Oil marks in particular are recoverable before a drying cycle and rarely after one.
Do not overload the drum
Overloading reduces cleaning and increases abrasion between garments. It is a false economy that shows up as pilling and dull colour within months.
Separate whites and colours
Obvious, and still the most common cause of grey chef whites. Kitchen whites in particular should never share a load with coloured front of house wear.
Where the Rules Change
Flame resistant workwear. Never use fabric softener, which leaves a flammable residue on the cloth. Bleach and starch cause similar problems. Incorrect laundering can strip protection from a garment still well within its service life, so the instructions have to reach whoever operates the machine, not just the person who signed the order. Healthcare garments. Bleach and high temperature are usually non negotiable for hygiene, which is exactly why the fabric specification matters so much up front. Polyester rich blends hold colour under that regime where cotton will not.
By Branding Method
- Embroidery: the most tolerant. Polyester thread holds colour through bleach and hot commercial cycles. Wash inside out to protect the stitching from abrasion.
- Sublimation: effectively permanent, since the dye is inside the fibre. Normal care is enough.
- Screen printing and DTF: wash inside out, avoid bleach, never iron directly over the print, and skip the tumble dryer where you can.
- Vinyl: same as above, and the most vulnerable to direct heat of any method.

Why do our chef whites go grey?
Almost always because whites are being washed with coloured garments, or at a temperature too low to lift oil properly. Kitchen whites should be laundered as their own load and stains treated before drying.
Does washing damage reflective tape?
Yes. Retroreflective tape loses performance through washing, abrasion and UV well before the fabric wears out, and the loss is invisible in daylight. Follow the stated maximum wash count and inspect the tape rather than the garment.
How do we stop printed logos cracking?
Wash inside out, avoid bleach, do not iron directly over the print and minimise tumble drying. If logos are still failing early, the garment is probably being laundered commercially and embroidery would be the more durable choice.
How often should uniforms be replaced?
Plan a cycle rather than replacing on appearance. For certified garments the cycle should follow the wash count the protection is rated for. For everything else, judge cost per year of service rather than cost per piece.
